Water Hammer
Ever hear a banging, knocking, clanging or clunking noise after shutting off the water
to your sink? We call this a water hammer. A water hammer occurs when you turn OFF the water flow suddenly. This could be
from turning OFF a dishwasher, clothes washer, toiler or a lav faucet very suddenly resulting in abruptly creating a pressure
or shock wave down the water line through the plumbing pipes thus creating a "hammer" like noise. Over time,
damage to pipes and valves can eventually weaken pipe joints. Water hammers arresters
sometimes referred as air chambers, water capacitors or air cushions are in most homes today; these devices are air filled
chambers that are connected to the plumbing that allow pressure waves to dissipate without harm into the cushion air. If you
hear conitues noise through-out your home, then your home does not have these devices installed, but if you hear this noise
while the water is running then it is a different problem all together.
